Safety of Autonomous Driving: Risk acceptability in driving automation
Porsche Engineering
Perform a literature research on the topic of risk acceptability for functions featuring L3 or L4 driving automation degree. Research the topic of risk acceptability on the aggregate level and individual scenario level and their possible conversion or relation to each other. Relate the definition with the existing standards or standards under development including ISO 26262, ISO 21448, UL 4600 and ISO TS 5083.

Confirm the literature research results by conducting a survey among a representative sample. Use statistical methods to select, perform and evaluate the sample. Comment on the observations and whether it matches with the literature research.

Apply budgeting of the risk acceptability along an example architecture of such L3 or L4 function based on the results from the previous research. Provide a list of metrics (KPIs) on the system architecture level that are impacted by the risk acceptability and describe a relation between these. Explore the options of both quantitative and qualitative relationships, including the well-established methods of FTA (deductive analysis) and FMEA (inductive analysis).

Describe how the results of the thesis could be used in an automotive safety case to argue that a particular function employing driving automation is safe.
